Questions
Is my file uploaded anywhere?
No. The page reads your file inside your browser and never sends it anywhere. Its security settings block it from connecting to any server, so it couldn't send your file even by mistake. You can disconnect from the internet after the page has loaded and it keeps working.
Does it merge my contacts automatically?
Only exact duplicates (rows that are identical once spacing and capitals are tidied) are removed automatically. Likely duplicates are grouped for you to decide, because merging two different people is a worse mistake than keeping one duplicate.
What counts as a likely duplicate?
Two rows with the same email address, the same phone number (the last eight digits, so +383 44 123 456
matches 044 123 456
), or names that are at least 88% similar after accents, punctuation and company endings like Ltd
or Corporation
are set aside. When similar names have different emails, the group says so: they may be two different people.
Which columns does it look at?
Columns whose headings mention email, name, company or organisation, and phone, mobile or WhatsApp. If no heading says email, a column where most values look like email addresses is used. Every other column is kept as it is.
Accented names look wrong after opening my CSV
Some CSV files are saved in an older encoding. Contact Cleaner detects Western and Central European encodings and tells you which one it used; the downloaded files are saved so Excel shows accented names correctly.
